Becoming An American Doctor

Dr. Jalkennen Joseph, MD, grew up on a remote South Pacific island and became the second physician from his homeland to earn a US medical education. His early life was influenced by indigenous traditions and a strong desire for knowledge, leading him to Guam for better educational opportunities. Inspired by Micronesian values, he became a US citizen and served two tours in Iraq, where he found his passion for medicine. After overcoming challenges as a veteran, he graduated from medical school and became a board-certified emergency physician, advocating for healthcare equity in Pohnpei and Micronesia. His journey exemplifies the American Dream.
